To be a great freestyle rapper the two main things you will need are lots of practice and a large vocabulary.

Free styling as you already know probably means rapping of the top of your head without anything written down, however a good way to get better at freestyeling is to write more lyrics. Writing often will mean you will learn words that rhyme and learn more about structure so when it comes to an impromtu freestyle you will have much more ability. 

You should try and analyze other rappers work, ask questions like what mood were they feeling at the time? or is there a deeper meaning to the lyrics?

Learn from other rappers however don't ever aim to copy another rappers style/flow. You should create your own style and method.
